Mesothelioma is
a kind of cancer that is
almost always caused when a person is exposed to asbestos - a toxic
mineral that was once commonly used for its excellent insulation
properties. This type of cancer strikes the mesothelium - a protective
lining that covers many different organs in the body, but that most
commonly covers areas of the lungs. Asbestos is easily inhaled and then
has a very negative effect on the mesothelium in the body's lungs which
quite commonly causes this severe form of cancer. Treating the
condition is possible, with about 75 percent of patients having their
lifespan extended by five years or more.
Asbestos
Cancer Mesothelioma
Since asbestos cancer mesothelioma
is most commonly
caused by an exposure to asbestos, it most commonly strikes people who
work in construction and building trades. Back when asbestos was still
commonly used, the people who worked with the material typically
contracted this form of cancer all the time. Today, asbestos is no
longer used in construction or building, but it can still be found in
older buildings and must be looked out for in situations where older
buildings are being renovated or otherwise worked on. Otherwise, those
performing such work can contract this disease and may begin noticing
symptoms within a couple of years.
Mesothelioma:
Questions and Answers
One of the most
common symptoms of mesothelioma
is shortness of breath that seems to
occur all the time and for no apparent reason - i.e., the person has
not been running or otherwise exerting themselves to any great extent.
This shortness of breath is brought on by fluid that builds up between
the lungs and the walls of the chest. Another common symptom is chest
wall pain which is also triggered by this buildup of fluid. People may
begin experiencing marked weight loss despite not reducing their
caloric intake - this can be a major warning sign as well. Anyone who
believes they have been exposed to asbestos in the past should consult
with a doctor right away.
