Asbestos Cancer Mesothelioma

Benign Multicystic Mesothelioma

Cancer is such a complicated disease, and up to now, there is no easy cure for it. Also known as malignant neoplasm, cancer starts in an alteration in the normal mechanism of human cell growth (cell mutation), which gives rise to new tissue growth in the already present tissues of the body. There are several factors that trigger this such as diet, genetics and lifestyle. Not all cancers are life-threatening, as cancer can either be benign or malignant. Benign cancers are tissue overgrowths which are non-invasive and do not metastasize, while malignant cancers are more dangerous because the cancer cells invade nearby tissues and spread to other organs. There are many kinds of cancer, mostly named from what part of the body the malignancy has formed - lung cancer, bone cancer, colon cancer, etc. For instance, benign multicystic mesothelioma, by its name, is a cancer that affects the mesothelium. The good thing is that this type of cancer is not life-threatening.

What is Benign Multicystic Mesothelioma?

The mesothelium is a protective membrane that lines most of the body's internal cavity such as the peritoneum (cavity for the internal organs), the pericardial cavity (for the heart), and the pleural cavity (for the lungs). In benign multicystic mesothelioma, there is an overgrowth of epithelial cells that make up the mesothelium. It is hard to detect this type of cancer because it's rare. In the early stages, there may be no exhibiting signs and symptoms of this disease. But the usual signs and symptoms which suggest this kind of cancer are the following: difficulty of breathing, fever, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, anemia or extreme weight loss, chest pain, fluid in the lungs, change in bowel movement and swollen feet.

Benign Multicystic Mesothelioma Causes

The major cause of benign multicystic mesothelioma is too much exposure to asbestos. For this type of cancer to be diagnosed, one must be subject to a complete physical examination, x-ray tests, and biopsy for confirmation. On the other hand, the treatment for this cancer is focused on alleviating pain and promoting comfort. There are many techniques used to either remove or shrink the tumor such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Even if benign multicystic mesothelioma is not "cancerous", or rather dangerous, one must still do all means to avoid it. Having regular health check-ups, a healthy lifestyle, and avoiding asbestos exposure are the best preventive measures at hand.
