One of the most
common types of asbestos
cancer is malignant mesothelioma, a
blanket term that covers all of the
different types of mesothelioma that a person can suffer from including
pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma
and testicular mesothelioma. This general term refers to any one of
these conditions, and represents a type of cancer that has been caused
by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a toxic material whose small,
microscopic fibers are easily inhaled and breathed into the body; over
long periods of time, these fibers can trigger cancer in the
mesothelium - a lining that protects most of the organs in the human
body.
What
is Malignant Mesothelioma?
Malignant
mesothelioma is a particularly
insidious disease; it often goes undetected in the human body for
decades. In fact, many people do not begin exhibiting symptoms of this
condition until as many as fifty years after their first exposure to
asbestos. Another complicating factor regarding this disease is that
many of its symptoms are quite general in nature; people often mistake
the symptoms as signs of less harmful conditions and do not bother
checking into them with a doctor until much more damage has been done.
Diagnosing this illness is difficult, but anyone who has reason to
believe that they've been exposed to asbestos should consult with a
physician as soon as possible to improve their chances of fighting off
the disease.

Information
The symptoms
of malignant mesothelioma vary depending on which part of the body is
affected - and which form of the disease has been contracted. With
pleural mesothelioma, for examples, difficulty breathing, a persistent
dry cough and pains in the chest area are all typical. People suffering
from peritoneal mesothelioma - which strikes the abdominal region - may
experience digestive upsets or lumps under the skin in that area. All
forms of the illness can cause general fatigue, weight loss and anemia.
Diagnosing this illness can be incredibly difficult, but those who have
been exposed to asbestos should always get screened periodically.
